The Earthquake Triangulation app provides a simple interactive map where students or instructors can estimate the location of an earthquake using the distances between the earthquake and 3 or more seismic stations. The application allows users to place their choice of seismic stations on the maps and then enter the distances to the earthquake.
They use three seismographs in a process called triangulation to determine earthquake epicenters. Using historical seismographs, engineers forecast the strength or magnitude of earthquakes and make predictions and determine building codes and safety protocols.
FREE Earthquake Worksheets As a teacher, the safety of your students is a top priority which means that emergency procedures need to be addressed in class and reviewed when necessary. This section contains 16 worksheets about earthquakes which can be helpful to both you and your students.Earthquakes can sometimes be nothing more than small tremors or shakes, but sometimes they can cause damage and devastation. Earthquakes can make buildings fall down and set off landslides, as well as having many other deadly effects. An earthquake that occurs at the bottom of the sea can push water upwards and create massive waves called tsunamis.Place a ruler (or straight edge) on the chart between the points you marked for the distance to the epicenter and the amplitude. The point where your ruler crosses the middle line on the chart marks the magnitude (strength) of the earthquake. This earthquake had a magnitude of 5.0.
Triangulation 'Triangulation' can also be achieved by using different research techniques. Triangulated techniques are helpful for cross-checking and used to provide confirmation and completeness, which brings 'balance' between two or more different types of research. The purpose is to increase the credibility and validity of the results.

Today, earthquakes are often predicted as is the potential destruction they may cause. During a geology lesson consider taking a day or two to study the science of earthquakes.

Read MoreIn an earthquake, an epicenter is a point on the surface of the Earth right above where the focus of the earthquake occurred. Triangulation uses three data points to cross verify information.
Read MoreEARTHQUAKES Practice with Triangulation: Locating an earthquake epicenter You learned that seismologists determine the distance to the earthquake epicenter using the difference between S and P wave arrival times. To locate the epicenter of the earthquake, seismologists use the distance data from 3 different seismographs, and then draw circles that distance away from the station.
